CEPC Annual Meeting Luncheon - May 29, 2024
Ensuring Your Client’s Charitable Legacy (By Working Well with Charities)
11:30am - 1:30pm | Myers Park Country Club

As with most things in the law, dealing with a client’s charitable bequest can be more complicated than expected. Andrew Fussner, Vice President of Estate Settlement for the American Heart Association, has seen plenty of ways things can go wrong with a charitable bequest over his 20+ years with the organization and in handling 10,000+ bequests on its behalf. He will start by discussing who the right person is to contact at a charity (which can often be half the battle). He’ll tackle things that an estate planner can do during the planning process to minimize any problems down the road; such as naming the correct charity, putting restrictions on the gift, asset selection (including some stories about interesting assets left to the AHA and other charities), and how staff at the charity can assist you. He will end by discussing some of the potential obstacles and pain points both attorneys and charities feel during probate or trust administration once a client has passed away and what to do about them.
